MeTTaCal is committed to making its calendar usable by everyone, including people who use assistive technology.
Conformance target
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard referenced by the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549.
What we have done
The calendar grid is exposed with ARIA grid roles, and you move across the days and times with the arrow keys, Home, and End. The month view is exposed as a labelled grid too.
You can run the calendar from the keyboard alone:
- Press Enter or Space on a focused day column to start a new event there.
- Each event is a button, so it takes focus in order and opens with Enter or Space.
- In the week view, once an event is open you can move it with the arrow keys. Each new time is announced, Enter saves the move, and Escape cancels it.
- Press Delete or Backspace to remove the event you have focused on the grid.
- Open an event's menu with the Menu key or Shift+F10. Focus moves into the menu, the arrow keys with Home and End step between items, and Escape closes it and returns you to the event.
- Press f to turn on hint mode. Every visible control gets a short label, and typing the label jumps straight to it, including any event on the grid. You can change the hint key in settings.
Status changes are announced through a live region, and errors are shown as accessible notifications rather than blocking dialogs.
Known limitations
A few interactions still need a pointer, and each has a keyboard path that we are making more direct:
- Changing an event's length by dragging its top or bottom edge is pointer-only. To change the times with the keyboard, open the event and edit its start and end fields.
- In the day view you move an event by editing its start and end fields rather than nudging it with the arrow keys on the grid. Arrow-key nudging in the day view is planned.
- On the grid, events take focus one at a time as you Tab through them. Hint mode (the f key) is the quick way to reach a specific event. A single stop that you step through with the arrow keys is planned.
- In the planner sidebar, a someday item is a draggable card that also holds its own buttons. The buttons work with the keyboard, but nesting them inside a clickable card is a structure we are redesigning.
Feedback
If you hit an accessibility barrier, contact us at the address on our website and we will work to fix it.
- The app honors
prefers-reduced-motion: every animation and transition collapses to a near-instant frame when your system asks for reduced motion. - High contrast light and High contrast dark themes are available under Settings > Appearance, held to the same automated WCAG AA and APCA contrast checks as every theme.
- The interface is available in English, German, Spanish, and French (Settings > General).
